London’s Serpentine Galleries has appointed Executive Director of Frieze Los Angeles Bettina Korek as its new CEO. She will be working in partnership with the Serpentine Galleries Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist.

Building on its current success and delivering an ambitious program for Serpentine’s 50th Anniversary in 2020, the new team will take the galleries into an exciting phase.

“Bettina Korek has a visionary understanding of art and its contexts and an incredible track record in supporting artists and their communities,” Obrist commented.

Korek comes with more than 15 years of experience as an arts advocator and administrator. She is currently serving as the Executive Director of Frieze Los Angeles, which was inaugurated at Paramount Pictures Studio in 2019.

She will be there for the 2020 edition of the art fair as it expands its program that is aimed at increasing engagement with art throughout LA.

Korek is also the founder of ForYourArt that produced collaborative artist initiatives and free weekly guides to local exhibitions and events. In 2012 and 2017, ForYourArt organized the Participating Galleries program for the Getty Pacific Standard Time.

She has also served on the Los Angeles County Arts Commission since 2011 and was its President from 2016 through 2017.

Korek said in a statement, “This is the only opportunity that could inspire me to leave Los Angeles. Some of the most compelling qualities of LA as a city are embodied by the Serpentine as an institution: intrepid innovation, fluidity across disciplines, an irresistible preoccupation with the future.”
